Is there such a thing? Well, all punches that use juice have a considerable amount of sugar, but this one is a good "go to" because you also use a considerable amount of basil. I always have tons of basil growing in my garden and its great to have creative ways to use it up. Basil is a stress buster-it contains phytochemicals that studies suggest may lower cortisol, a hormone secreted when you’re tense. Its a super source of iron and is a great detox for the liver.
So back to the holiday punch-I make this recipe year round when I am hosting a large group, and this past weekend I made it for Halloween using 4oz. of basil instead of 2 ounces and it transformed into a beautiful green color-I called it Witches Brew and it was a hit! Any other time, it has a nice yellow/orange color. It is served in a punch bowl or beverage dispenser and guests can add either vodka or rum at to finish off. Yum!
2 oz fresh organic basil leaves and stems
3 quarts organic lemonade
6 cans mandarin oranges
Blend the basil and mandarin oranges with their juices in a blender until basil bits are pureed smooth. Add the lemonade to the mixture and stir. Add entire mixture to a punch bowl or beverage dispenser. Add ice just prior to serving.
